These mummy dogs and apple mouths are sure to get your little ones in the mood for Halloween. They are really more like crafts than recipes, and you could even have the kids help you with them. I found the mummy dogs at Pillsbury and adapted them a little by leaving out the cheese. I found the apple mouths at PBS and adapted the cutting technique a little by making both sides just slices and then added the Fruit by the Foot tongue.
For the Mummy Dogs:
Makes 6 mummies.
1 can crescent rolls
6 hot dogs
mustard
Preheat oven to 370 degrees. Spread crescent rolls out and press the perforations, so that you make 4 rectangles. Using a knife slice each rectangle into long lengths about 1/4 inch wide. Wrap around hot dogs to look like bandages leaving space for eyes. Bake for approximately 10 minutes or until bandages are golden brown.
For the Apple Mouths:
Makes 4 mouths
1 large red apple
lemon juice
almond slivers
1 fruit roll-up/fruit by the foot/etc.
Slice apple into 1/4 to 1/2 inch slices. Brush with lemon juice to prevent browning. Press almond slivers into apples around the edge near the peel. Cut a tongue from the fruit by cutting a two to three inch piece and rounding the end. To assemble, place bottom of mouth on plate, drape tongue over bottom teeth, and carefully add top teeth.
These are totally adorable! Perfect for after-school-snacks or fun classroom treats!
